Australian UBER Drivers - We need your help to get National Media Coverage.

As I mentioned on another thread without National Media coverage about the plight of Uber drivers in Australia we will get nowhere. https://uberpeople.net/threads/we-have-listened.30592/

We all need to actively get our story out; with this in mind I have put together a rough list of the major media contacts across the Nation.

Given the amount of unhappy drivers that are on this site nationally we can have a voice and start to create a groundswell. And maybe just maybe we can make a difference for all of us.

These are only my thoughts - please feel free to add suggestions, offer services, contacts, etc. I am also happy to facilitate connecting people up discreetly.

Our esteemed HC drivers - surely you have built up a number of media/legal/ big end of town contacts in your travels that you could have a quite word with, if you have not already.

What would be wonderful to have are a few different themed Media Releases. Suggestions below.
• The impact of the GST on drivers
• The BS earnings that UBER are using to entice new drivers, whilst Uber are burning the existing drivers that help them take a share of the market
• The low fares that drivers have to endure, ratings etc, etc.

There are a number of very articulate people on this forum that really know what they are talking about, maybe they would like to also put something together. I seem to remember that someone on the one of the Aussie city forums has communications experience. Maybe they would like to assist with drafting something. Please put your hand up if interested.

Would also be wonderful to have a National Facebook page, if we don't already - we would need someone to set this up and act as a responsible moderator, so that bad language and abusive comments can be deleted. Twitter is also another avenue.

Also what about Change .Org petition - https://www.change.org/ just a thought 

In the mean time below are the contact numbers for various media outlets. You may also have media outlets that are not on the list that you may wish to contact.

Just remember to keep your language civil, factual and to the point.

Unfortunately, Uber drivers are willingly accepting these circumstances and rates by continuing to drive for Uber. It is a free country. Any protest action will always be judged against a background of thousands who continue to sign on and drive for Uber.

More the reason to get it out to the media. People read papers, listen to the radio, and go online to get media updates. People also talk within their communities. .
I am not suggesting protest action - all I am suggesting is that people get in touch with the media, and start to get the the real UBER picture out there.

A big part of Ubers power is it's voting pax, we see this in todays article: http://www.smh.com.au/business/comment-and-analysis/the-uberisation-of-activism-20150807-gitxia.html

Share Drivers have the same access to the same voters as Uber does....how do we use this to our advantage?

ANSWER: We put the same sign into every Melb Uber Car.

If it's the same sign then pax cannot single out share drivers for bad reviews or complaints/photos back to uber...if everybody's doing it and they will soon catch on. The sign needs to be to the point. Something that pax might

See how those "sure I'll take your word for it" journos like that and whether they will just take Ubers word with out research again (Murdoch minions probs still will)! Feel free to join me.

The Uberisation of the press.

Uber pays GST? what? an overseas based app provider has volunteered to pay GST of it's own initiative when it's actually exempt? WOW what a great corporate citizen.....

Sadly it's all baloney and no doubt influenced by some impressive presser event, plenty of cheese, but certainly no whining.

Two things:

1.Uber's price increases does not cover the additional GST share drivers have to pay to cover the GST because share drivers pay GST on the whole fare including Uber's 20% cut. So only a 12.5% price increase would actually have compensated the drivers.

2. It was not a uniform 10% price increase and it was very much funny money...but nobody bothered to look at the actual figures did they?

Melbourne drivers saw only a 2.2% per Km increase. The per Km part of the fare makes up the biggest part of their income. The biggest jump in price was in the base rate (like flagfall), but this rate is only applied once per journey, and has little benefit (an extra 35c per fare) to drivers especially on longer fares.

But at least Uber got plenty more free press and the chance to present "Robert" a supposed share driver but somehow his comments seem scripted to 100% support Uber....hmmmm

See drivers real reactions to the price increase in the melbourne uberpeople.net forum and their real feelings about Uber here

I guess you guys missed this ABC Radio National interview....this is what you are up against. .. professionals. ..very highly trained and experience in Media/PR Spin...

Just a suggestion. . You need a strategy. . A battle plan. .. coz these guys are battle hardened mercenaries. ...and they don't take prisoners. .

A scatter gun approach by splinter groups is unlikely to make a dent..It is like throwing petrol on a fire hoping to put it out....Every media article gives them more Publicity ....they love it...look at the Taxi protest in Perth....it was the biggest single increase in riders they had seen in 12 months...

Have a read of this ...the little guys won. ..but it was a long battle. ..

Good luck with your crusade I wish you well....

This is correct. Disunity is death.

If Oz share drivers are willing to get involved in sharedriveaustralia.com.au then we can work together on a more unified and agreed strategy that represents #ShareDrivers views in a more focused, democratic and balanced manner.

I did another interview this morning. The journo was asking for the views of Australian share drivers...I did my best to represent the views of all.

Plenty of people have been signing up to SDA, but unfortunately we don't see much feedback directly from the membership.

So I did my best to represent the discussions on this forum and the views that SDA has put forward, but keeping the two separate. Shame to have to split the two, weakens the arguments as Ubercurious points out.

I agree. I think I used the term "Share Drivers" not "Ridesharing" in the quote you point out.

It's a collective noun I've used repeatedly for those who subscribe to the "App-Based Transportation Network Company" to provide the service, not the action of providing the service itself, if you know what I mean?

It's definitely a good practice to watch the pay statements closely I'd say.

Bison takes issue with the use of "sharing"? Now I understand. Well, I think this the first protest I've come across.

If I recall correctly, g00r asked the ATO to stop calling it "ride sourcing" and start calling it "ride share" or was it "share drive"

What I am hoping the term will achieve is to reach out to all Australian Share Drivers, new or seasoned. Whether they drive for Uber, a new Australian start up App or are thinking of driving for Lyft or other competitor.

I think saying "App-Based Transportation Network Company" although appropriate is a bit exclusive and does not reach anybody but the hyper politically aware which I compliment you Bison as being. But not everyone is in this boat.

"App-Based Transportation Network Company" also does not refer specifically to drivers.

I'm not trying to be pedantic, I'm just trying to reach as many drivers as possible. If it is a fact that Uber calls it's partners "share drivers" when they first sign up, this may well be what they think they are and when they go looking for support, what will they google? "App-Based Transportation Network Company"?

choose to be Pedantic,
but "Bombastic" is Bisonic on this Issue!

Enabling a Sociopathic Scofflaw and
Ayn Rand Cultist to Ruin Lives & Live-
lihoods with Orwellian "NewSpeak"
and Bogus "Math," wherein, The Drivers
(NEVER "partners" because they're NOT)

Passengers, Public, Municipalities, Coun-
ties, States, Commonwealths, Provinces,
Territories .....ENTIRE COUNTRIES are
Serially BrainWashed, like the Populace
of NORTH KOREA.

Empower the Very People that Travis
seeks to Disenfranchise via R O B O T S
by utilizing the Very Term used by
Legislators across the U.S. AND the 1st
and only Drivers' Union in Seattle.

DON'T be complicit in "Mind Raping"
just because it's #[F]Uber's "Thing."

"App-Based TNC Workers" or "As-yet-
to-be-Adjudicated Employees of the

I can't fault you on what you say about Luber.

I just googled "App-Based TNC Workers" and every reference on the first page was American.

But I'm communicating in Australia where that expression is virtually unknown. I can't be asked to invent a new term in Australia, popularise it, make people understand what it is when there is already a term they use and understand... Then try create a movement behind it... it is too much to ask.

We also don't use expressions like "teamsters", in Australia they are unionists.

I think it's time for some reflection here in this discussion, lets get some perspective...

You have so far said the following in your personal attack on me for using the expression:

1. don't be a "Tool for Travis"
2. play "Poe-TAY-toe, Poe-TAH-toe" with the UPNF Readership or Your Australian Audience
3. E N A B L I N G the #Pickpocket Billionaire in his Hypomanic Quest for World Domination and Sub-serviance to his "Goddess of Disruption," Ayn Rand.
4. Enabling a Sociopathic Scofflaw and Ayn Rand Cultist to Ruin Lives & Live-lihoods with Orwellian "NewSpeak" and Bogus "Math,"
5. suggest by using the term 'share' I'm somehow "complicit in "Mind Raping" just because it's #[F]Uber's "Thing."

all this for the use of 'Share Drivers'?

Seems extreme and offensive.

... if you think that Casuale Haberdasher was "extreme and offensive" ....and if ya wanna play body line cricket ( for the benefit of US readers this is when a "hardball" is pitched or bowled deliberately at the head and body of the opponent ...without the benefit of any helmet or armour.... ) with the big end of town .....you might as well give up now.....

For those that are interested in preparing for dealing with the"Dark Arts" this book is worth reading as a primer for dealing with a certain type of person in "Big Business"....

I don't expect good behavior in those quarters.....Bullwinkle should mind his manners though.
