Right up to the last minute almost our City Leaders were resistant to canceling SXSW.

Today they swing far to the other side prohibiting gatherings of 2500 or more people through May 1st with exceptions. https://www.kxan.com/news/coronavirus/large-gatherings-banned-in-austin-through-may-1-city-says/

The Frank Irwin Center seats 16,734 people

The Bass Concert Hall seats 3000 people and most Aladdin Showings over the next 2 weeks are sold out.
AS are several other shows.

The Rodeo sees upwards of 70,000 for the final events

MotoGP 100K+ but the Circuit is outside Austin City Limits. Although all the fans gather in Austin

We have Hotels, Conferance Rooms and the Convention Center that all have expectations of events of more than 2500 people

Watch for the lists of exceptions vs cancellations.

UT Athletic Events are supposedly unaffected but I'm not sure I understand why since UT cancelled their Open House yesterday.

COTA was annexed by the City of Austin 5 years ago; so I wouldn't count on anything going on there until after May 1st unless they are granted an exception

I was unaware of that. Why is it then that APD doesn't get the traffic management duties rather than the JokesterSquad currently working it?
COTA is private property and, as such, the hiring of off-duty police officers is the responsibility of the property owner - COTA. APD officers are not issued a car to take home; whereas, most Sheriffs & Constables do take the car home, so they can use the car for "off duty gigs ... which is why you see Constables & Sherrif Deputies managing traffic and occasionally issuing tickets at COTA.

Similarly, all the cops you see controlling traffic in Austin for a specific building or parking garages (mostly at evening rush hour) ... most are not APD officers (because they were not assigned that duty by APD), but rather they are DPS Troopers, Sheriff Deputies, Constables, some Austin PD, some non-Austin PD (Bee Cave, Rollingwood, etc), I've even seen a Game Warden ... all are controlling traffic at the behest of a private property owners (mostly garages, some hotels) to keep Austin traffic flowing - and while they are all doing an extra paid gig (rather than official APD duties), bear in mind, they are still sworn peace officers who can & will write you an enforceable ticket if you violate city, county, state or federal law. *yesterday, I saw that the Fairmont hired an officer to stand at the Westbound bus stop to help taxis, uber and guests leave the hotel as they exit just east of the hotel onto Cesar Chavez ... about time, some times it's a real pain to get out of there.

Annexing for sales tax & property tax and giving a sh!t about safety are two different things!
Also, to be one person going to COTA is one thing, but to be an uber driver picking up 15 - 20 different people from god knows where and sharing a confined space with them day after day is another. Driving rideshare comes with a unique level of risk. What the city politicians do has nothing to do with safety, its all about money and popularity.
Sxsw was cancelled because of thousands signing a petition and hundreds calling and complaining and because of major corporate sponsors pulling out. It had nothing to do with safety.

SXSW was also cancelled so that Adler could apply for federal money in case Congress decides to start dolling out disaster relief money. And declaring a State of Emergency shields the city from law suits should anyone get sick and die.

in the end politicians typically do whatever they think is going to cover their asses

I turned the UBER app on around 4:40 leaving Round Rock heading for 35 and Onion Creek.

I needed to swing by a Post office so I cut across Braker and hit Mopac.

South to 222 and then in to Burnett. South to Medical Parkway and finally connected to Lamar.

Lamar across the bridge to Manchaca all the way to Slaughter. Slaughter to 35 to Onion Creek Parkway.

I double checked a few times to be sure I was online.

Well over an hour ride due to traffic.

Not a single ping the entire trip.

Traffic seemed normal this morning but I guess a lot more people are working from home than we are hearing about.

This $hit is in sane... I bet food and grocery delivery demand will go up though...and then everyone will do it and we will all be getting scraps soon enough. 🤪🤔🧐🤦🏻‍♀️

Business degree, some digital marketing experience and accounts receivable background

Hey Lyft is hiring onboarding ambassadors! Take a look at it.

Round Rock is as dead with Dell employees working from home. I used to get good use out of Dell employees, they helped me translate my communications from Uber Support.
That's a big tip for you bc it speeds up the communication process with Ryan!

NCAA events, such as March Madness, will be played out by the teams with only essential staff and limited family in attendance!

Hopefully TV Crews will be a part of the essential staffing.

I'm wondering if venues will change. There is really no reason to use some of the larger venues that hosted these games without the fans. It's a huge venue expense that they will not recoup now.

I would expect the organizers and city to reconsider and the Rodeo to be cancelled now that Houston has cancelled theirs. https://www.kens5.com/article/news/...erns/285-f8db6b30-d464-486b-a484-b225c6317910

Houston Rodeo just got canceled today (https://www.chron.com/news/houston-...o-shut-down-coronavirus-concerns-15123010.php)
... hopefully, that won't prompt Houston drivers to come here - since Austin Rodeo has a green light to contiue
Based on my low earnings today and checking at the passenger app throughout the day to see other drivers, Austin is way over saturated. It seems to me that U/L have asked drivers from other cities to come on in. The next week and a half is really gonna suck.

Today President Donald J. Trump signed a Presidential Proclamation, which suspends the entry of most foreign nationals who have been in certain European countries at any point during the 14 days prior to their scheduled arrival to the United States. These countries, known as the Schengen Area, include: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. This does not apply to legal permanent residents, (generally) immediate family members of U.S. citizens, and other individuals who are identified in the proclamation.
