It will be interesting to see how the mess will be sorted out. Having worked in insurance claims in the past, claims and customer service is a big mess to begin with, but when you have tens of millions of people applying for benefits all at once, how on earth do you even manage that? Something on a scale of this will take 50,000-100,000 employees to accomplish.

Q: I'm self-employed and didn't previously qualify for unemployment. Am I eligible now?
Yes. This bill creates a new program, called Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, that extends benefits to gig workers, contractors and others who wouldn't otherwise qualify for unemployment compensation but cannot work due to the coronavirus emergency. You'll get the $600 per week, plus half the average unemployment benefit in your state.

Q: $600 is more than I made before losing my job. Will they cut my benefit?
No. If you qualify for unemployment, the $600 per week applies regardless of what your salary was. (There was a last-minute kerfuffle where a few Senate Republicans tried to reduce the benefits for those who were earning less, but that effort failed.)

Interesting...So if the average person in NJ gets $500 in UI, a gig worker will get $250 + $600 totaling $850 if I am reading that right

Assuming this stimulus law works as promised with respect to gig worker unemployment insurance, many of us can simply get paid more for staying at home for the next four months, and end up with even more money in our pockets than we expected because we will not be incurring expenses for fuel, maintenance, and depreciation.

So in effect, if you don't stop driving and start collecting this special coronavirus unemployment insurance instead, then you're either stupid or annoyingly principled.

Congress just turned rideshare on its head. Those of you still driving yesterday and today, could probably not find enough pax. On Monday, pax will not be able to find any drivers!

If you have any Uber/Lyft stock, sell it now and buy it back in three months at one third the price. No drivers = no corporate revenue = unattractive equity investment.

max in nj is $713, a gig worker would get $356.50 + $600 totaling $956.50

me personally, that's enough with no expenses. I'll ride out the 4 months and get a cash job bartending, when bars open

Also by staying home and not going out, you are staying alive. So there's that....

It doesn't say 50% of the max, it says 50% of the average in your state. Depends what the average is. It could be $500 or $400 or $350 and then you get half of that average plus the $600 from the feds.

it's based on previous income, so if u qualify for max (which i do) then u get max/2+$600

It doesn't say, we will give you 50% of what you would qualify for if you qualified under normal circumstances, it says "You'll get the $600 per week, plus half the average unemployment benefit in your state." Also, how could you qualify for the max when under normal circumstances as a Rideshare driver you don't qualify at all?

That would be an annualized income of $49,738 or $16,579 for the covered four month period without any expenses to pay.

Yeah, there will be a lot of U/L drivers still on the road. NOT!!! Most would stop driving for only the $600 per week.

Also max of $713 is based off of 60% of your income. In order for you to qualify for the max under normal circumstances you would have to have earned at least $1188.33 every week. That amounts to $61,793.16 a year. Not saying it's impossible if you drive a lot of hours a week or do some other gig job. Those are the numbers.

Well deserved don't u think?
Yep. And don't forget your $1200 one-time stimulus payment, plus more according to your family size.

Personally, I'd rather be eligible for the $500 billion part of the stimulus package, but I'll take every single cent I'm entitled to since it will be us who will have to pay the taxes later in order to pay us all now. (Think about the circular logic and reasoning within that one for a while!)

And consider what a godsend the coronavirus is to Boeing. First they hire the cheapest programmers somewhere in the third world at $9 an hour to create flight control systems which ultimately crashed two airplanes and killed hundreds of people, leading to the grounding of an entire fleets of a specific model -- and now only because of the coronavirus, they're getting massively bailed out!!!

My girlfriend lives in Spain. She's been home quarantined for almost 3 weeks and is collecting 80% of her salary. Our current government has absolutely no interest in helping the middle class or the working poor at all. Those of you who mock socialist countries might want to rethink things. Trump or whoever is voted in will still have no interest in helping anyone but the wealthy. God forbid the rich start losing money. #classwar

Remember vast majority of drivers are those with no SSN and using ITIN to file taxes, those are excluded from getting any benefits so drivers will still be out and about because they also need to provide for their families.
