I'm thinking of getting an Altima, probably 2012-14. It looks like the 2.5L engine gets about 10mpg more than the 6cyl but i'm worried it might be a bit of a gutless cracker-box.

Anyone have or had one (or test-driven one) that can give an opinion?

I have a 2015 Altima SL. EPA estimates are spot on. Plenty of power, even with 4 people. Probably the best four door to Uber with, amazing fuel efficiency and large, comfortable back seat. My rating is very high at 4.91.

Test drove a few today.. I was pretty surprised at how roomy it was. Got the ok from the salesman to leave their normal test-route and drove up into the hills where I live to see how it was.. It's no race car but it had plenty of power to climb up the mountain and I LOVED seeing the "36.5 mpg" average showing on the dash.

I think the Altima 2.5 is pretty good power and mpg wise but check out the Jetta 1.8t or Passat 1.8t use regular gas , I've been getting 33mpg in my Passat doing uber and 44 mpg on highway trips . It's not fast but the turbo engine is nice and has a ton of low end torque .

You get a ton of rear leg room in the Jetta and Passat for the money
