I have some bad news for you if you need that check now, you're not getting it.
Here's the summary:
If your 2019 or 2018 tax return includes ANYONE who as an ITIN number as opposed to a social security number, you're not getting jack.
An ITIN number is an alternate social security number for non-US citizens to use when filing US tax returns. ITINs are used by:
Certain legal US visa holders, who are not citizens but are liable for US taxes
or
Out of status immigrants (a/k/a Illegals) who work in the US and want to file taxes and get returns).
The stimulus package not only excludes those holding ITIN numbers from received the $1,200 but if you have a "mixed" tax return - one person has an ITIN number and everyone else has a Social Security #, then NO ONE RECEIVES THE STIMULUS PAYMENT.
Here's two real life examples:
1. My wife has an ITIN number. She has an H1B visa. Because we file jointly, not only is she not receiving $1,200 but I'm not receiving $1,200 (and I was born in the US and I've had a social security number for longer than most of you have been alive). My accountant ran the numbers and it's still in our favor to file jointly for 2019 and lose the $2,400 than to file separately with me getting $1,200. And because my wife's status will be adjusted before the 2021 tax season, we should (not guaranteed) be able to get the full tax credit of $2,400 for next year. I'm not counting on it, but if that comes thru, it'll be a nice gift.
2. I know a guy who entered the US illegally, married a US citizen and has three children born in the US. So the family has 4 US citizens and ! illegal ITIN holder. They should get $1,200 + $1,200 (both adults) and 3 kids = $500 + $500 + $500 = $3,900. But because there is ONE ITIN holder on the tax return, they are getting ABSOLUTELY ZERO.
This isn't a political statement. This is reality.
I've had the same accountant for 20+ years. He's old school - he meets me at my home every year - when I'm in town. Or we Skype and go over everything face-to-face. That's why I trust him.
But don't trust me. Look it up yourself via these links...
