I am planning to use the storage option for 90 days, You don't have to drop off the plates, since dmv is closed, you can retain the plates. It will take care of the insurance payment for next 90 days. But you cannot use your car in that period.
also you can take it off anytime you want, max period you can store for now is 90 days, but will depend on how the situation progresses.

Do you have a garage? Where are you going to park your car?

Yes do have private parking. But I am more concerned if I need to run some errands or shopping then I would need the car. In the end have to see if it will make sense to pay $300 a month in insurnace or not.
Let me uncomplicate this for you slow folks. Keeping your TLC plates means you will have freedom to travel during any lockdown. TLC are essential.
worth it!

Did you talk with your insurance broker, Tlc saying you need to surrender your tlc plates to dmv, but as you said dmvs are closed now. So if they are closed you dont need to surrender your plates? I parked my car on a street in long island and left the country. Can i just call my broker and ask to suspend my insurance for 90 days?

Have not talked to my insurnace broker as I am not decided yet. Anyways if you want to park your vehicle then you fill the form and email it to TLC. It's pretty simple form, once they send you back reply you call your broker. But you need to find out if you can park out in the street. Normally without plates you cannot park in street but this time since you will still have the plates on the car physically not sure if it changes anything.

Yes TLC confirmed plates Don't have to be removed since DMV is closed. It can stay on the car.

Plates have to be returned once DMV reopens. I submitted the application and received response within 24 hours.

Good afternoon:

We have received an email with your VEHICLE STORAGE DOCUMENTATION, accordingly the account for the above referenced has been placed in a 90 day STORAGE STATUS.

You cannot operate your vehicle as a "for-hire" vehicle when your vehicle license is placed in "in-storage" status. Operating for-hire without a current vehicle license is a violation of TLC rules.

Due to the closure of all NYS DMV offices individual owners of a vehicle with TLC plates will not be able to obtain passenger plates for their vehicles. As such the TLC will allow you to retain your TLC issued DMV plates until such time as the DMV re-opens their offices and you can surrender and obtain passenger plates for your vehicle. You cannot operate for-hire once you submit the storage form request. If you are found to be operating as an FHV, you will be subject to being summonsed and your vehicle is subject to being seized.

So after this do we need to get regular car insurance or not?
No you cannot get regular insurnace since you cannot get normal plates at the moment as DMV Is closed . Normally I think if you send TLC Plates for storage then you had to drop the TLC Plates at DMV and you could apply for normal plates to use your car wit regular insurance. But now once you put your TLC plates for storage then you cannot operate that vehicle. That's my thinking you can ask around, may be some one has info on it.

You cannot suspend your tlc insurance, you have to pay it otherwise if you don't pay there will be a lapse in ur insurance and your registration will be suspended. There is only one option and it's the TLC STORAGE,this is what my insurance agent said(I've called them)

just called my insurance broker and informed her about TLC storage plan, she is adamant that i need DMV surrender slip to cancel the insurance payments. I told her TLC has informed that we don't need to surrender plates to DMV since Offices are closed. She said insurance companies cannot accept TLC made rules.( TLC can go and pound sand for all they care) she did give me a month of deferred payment for month of April. so i guess am off the hook for month of april.
