I never wait for airport pick ups unless I'm in 1-10 car as soon as I am in the queue and I would only wait 5-10 min max. If not pings, I will move on. And I will try to avoid airport trips after 7am on weekdays. Trying to get back into the city or Eastern suburbs after a drop off after 7am is a nightmare. You pretty much says goodbye to any chance of being in a surge for the rest of the morning!

I've never waited more than 5 mins.....

I don't like international as flights are not regular enough..

I prefer domestic, plus Maccas is there.....

Its pot luck for long trips,

Had a pickup today to paddington at 9:20am, 3 mins wait, no time to get coffee from maccas..or a wee. :)

You need to know the times of flights and queue length to work the airport or just waste time...

Imagine Cabbies waiting for 1 hour in queue and they end up in Wolli Creek. Man that will be hard..
Actually cabbies have a short fare queue, if they can get back to domestic rank within 22 mins.
They go straight to the front of the queue without waiting..
It when you get fares to waterloo or alexandria that is a mad rush for the cabbies to get back in 22 mins

Three trips from international today. First to Mercure hotel $6.40; second to street just beside Arncliffe fire station $6.40.Third to Wolli Creek. Never again, what an absolute waste of time. But I got a fare back from Wolli Creek...and just to where? Yep international airport. What a shocker.
Thats why I never go near the airport..

You need to remember what industry you are working in.

You would have not complained had you got 3 long distance trips that tied into each other.

I tried an airport pickup for the first time a few days ago and waited quite a while. Will I do it again? Probably when there is a surge like there was Sunday night.

Having said that I had a quiet night last night and ended up in Coogee eating dinner. Was going to call it quits till I got a ping from Coogee to Ryde ($51), then driving home I got a ping in Strathfield to go to the city ($24). As soon as the drive was over I got a ping from the city to Cronulla ($43). When I was in Cronulla it was dead and I was thinking I would not get a ride out but sure enough 20 seconds after I dropped off my Pax I got a ping to take someone right back into the city ($48). When I dropped them off I got a ping straight away from city to Ashfield (half way home) for $16.

You need to take the good and the bad with this job....

Sometimes even if you are not at the airport Uber will force you into the queue. Very frustrating when you have to drive to Banksia just to get out of the queue but Uber don't care, if they see airport has a shortage of Uber's waiting they increase the size of the airport zone and don't give drivers the option to exit. Stupid Uber. So arrogant.

Good cabbie's(yes there are still some)learn very quick that you never wait in the que at the airport unless there are no cars and its peak times.I drove a cab part time for 35 years and did not bother with the airport que the last 10 of those, plenty of airport drop offs but then got the hell straight out of there and was very unusual if i had not had a hail by the time i got back to redfern.Only cabbies that waste time are the new drivers or the ones who don't know how to use the MDT dispatch system(ie new or old no English speaking ones).I'd say that would be the same for uber drivers.

I read someone posted on here if we get a short trip form the airport we can get back to the front of the queue.

Today I had the opportunity to test that out. Got one to Mascot, 1.92Km trip! I think the drop off was probably still in the airport zone!

Headed back towards the airport and sure enough I jumped back at the head of the queue!

Quickly got the next ping, it was to Alexandria! Not much better! I couldn't be bothered driving back 15 minutes to the airport to see if I can jump the queue again.

I wonder what the cut off is, is it distance travelled, total fare less than $X or time based like for taxis?

Queuing at the airport is a bit like going to the casino. The punter rarely wins. Your 40 minutes plus wait might be rewarded with a trip to Mascot, Arncliffe or St Peters. Very rarely will you get a decent trip to Parra, Mona Vale or beyond.

I only pick up at domestic if I need a pee at the Maccas and a bit of a break. Usually, I head straight out again in the direction of Redfern. After dropping off at international, I will only wait if I can see on the Sydney Airport app that a few planes have landed 30 minutes prior to me arriving there, and the queue size is under 15. Otherwise its generally off in the direction of Newtown.

Had another passenger recently on the Northern Beaches (non-airport trip) saying that he is a regular Sydney-Melbourne business traveler. He drives himself to the back streets of Botany, where it is free parking around the clock, and then calls an Uber to transport him the rest of the way. What I found funny is that he doesn't bother with an Uber on the return and just jumps in a waiting cab out front (yes - he has had many arguments about the long wait in the rank and then the short trip in peak hour traffic).

I have never used the airport queues. Always straight back to Alexandria for me after a drop off at either terminal. Normally get a ping within 5-10 minutes without fail.
