Just had to fight on the phone with fuber about a fair that they adjusted to $0.00. Glad to say I won and in only think I won after telling them I had it all on cam.
It started by picking up a pax off rosecrans to Kearney mesa on Sunday afternoon. Called pax to find out that acount owner had called ride for friend.. found said friend and drove her to destination. She could hardly speak English and after dropping her off she thanked me in a very broken English and handed me a tip of crumpled up bills. I threw the crumpled bills in my cup holder and drove off. About an hour later I stopped for a coffee and pulled out the tip to pay for my coffee to find that there were 4 $5 dollar bills and 3 $1 bills for a $23 tip. The whole ride was $12.57.
I thought either she grabbed the wrong amount or was very generous. Hey a tips a tip right.
2 days later I get an email saying that they adjusted the fair down to $0.00 as the pax said I solicited the payment in cash and that was against uber policy.
After about 25 min on the phone explaining that I never asked for cash and that pax handed me the cash as tip they didn't want to see things my way and only after telling them that I have it all on camera did they re-adjust my fare and actually gave me $0.88 more. Lol.
Similar story with lyft where the threats of a camera helped correct a missdoing but that's for another post.

There are countries you can pay cash for Uber rides. It is possible there was miscommunication between the rider and friend that requested the ride about how much the ride cost and how to pay for it. However, that was not communicated from driver to rider. Shame on Uber for taking the account holder's word on it (as always).

I don't generally have good experiences for rides that are "for a friend." Maybe it's just my perception, but the rider will carry an attitude that implies they aren't accountable since it's not their account. To add salt to the wound, the account holder never tips for a friend's ride, and who knows how they rate for a service they aren't receiving. One example, I received a 4* on a Lyft ride with zero tip for a ride from Oceanside to San Gabriel Valley.

Anytime I get a fare adjustment. I call support and all I say is that the fare shouldn’t have been adjusted. They never ask me for a reason or an explanation. I just simply say that it shouldn’t have been adjusted and they immediately give me the fare back every time with no back and fourth.

Just for sound. I keep my sound recording turned off.
True.

IMO A lot of why you'd want to record is for the audio. In this case it could prove OP did not ask for money. Cuts through the he said she said BS by simply providing the audio.

However, just having a camera is probably a somewhat decent deterrent to funny business.

As I understand it from what I've read here, a sign alone is not sufficient and you have to actually get their consent (California).
A sign advising the Rider they are being recording. Upon entering your personal property and continuing the ride they are giving consent.

If you drive for Uber, you should have a dashcam. Not having a dashcam is the most idiotic thing a driver can do.

It depends on when you drive, where you drive and type of class. I've driven for close to three years and never had a single issue. Driving XL might be what helps

As I remember you drive mostly in the AM correct?

I have started driving only in the mornings and my Uber experience is much different than driving drunks at night.
I get sober people going to work or the airport for the most part.
No one wants to barf in my car.
The down side is I start at 0400 to catch the surges. (not many Uber drivers want to get up at 0330)
I am done by noon, and generally have a stress free shift.

In the AM is best for me. I always start off with a ride from the border or ride to the airport. If it's the border, I'm only taking XL/ Plus which is normally surging at 2.0 or higher. I love starting the day with a $50 fare.
I live above Alpine and I get 4:30 AM pings from El Cajon 25 min down the hill. I am going there anyway and for 2x WTF?
When I drive early, people pay me to drive to work, not very damn much, but it is better than deadheading.
If I am dumb enough to keep this up my next vehicle will be XL capable. UberX is only a hobby in reality.
