The ACT Container Deposit Scheme launches on Saturday 30 June 2018.

This scheme will affect those rideshare drivers who offer bottled water to their riders.

From 30 June, Canberrans can return eligible containers, including cans and bottles, to receive a refund of 10 cents per container. To fund the scheme, there will be an increase in the initial cost of the purchased items.

Drivers may find that in many cases they pay the higher initial costs but their riders claim the 10 cents refund after taking the empty container with them.

The ACT is focusing on a face-to-face model using selected social enterprise shop fronts to pay the refunds rather than the reverse vending machines used in New South Wales.

The first return sites are:

(1) Vinnies Belconnen: corner of Rae and Purdue streets;

(2) Vinnies Dickson: 1/9 Woolley Street;

(3) Vinnies Tuggeranong: corner of Pittman Street and Athlon Drive;

(4) Salvos Fyshwick: 15 Mildura Street; and

(5) Fyshwick bulk depot (for more than 500 containers): 151 Gladstone Street.

You can receive a cash or electronic refund or make a tax deductible donation to the relevant charity.
