The other day I had a 100 mile trip. I may have turned it down under usual circumstances, but the week had been so slow and it was surging 1.4x so I took it. Worth it? Probably, given how slow it was.

It made me wonder, though; is it okay to accept cash for a trip and cancel the trip in Uber? I know drivers do this, but given I have a lease and gps attached to the car I don't think Uber would have a problem putting together what happened. So does anyone know if this is a practice that could lead to discipline? I'd contact Uber directly, but I really think that just asking the question could flag my account in some way

I'd say I'm slightly more paranoid than the average person, but only when I think I'm doing something that may get me in trouble. Thus, my question. If you haven't noticed Uber has been in the news quite a bit for their surveillance recently. I don't consider this to be a paranoid thought, but what paranoid person would? Lol

You can do whatever you want. It's your car.

They could have software to track you and if you accept a ride to a certain location, the pax cancels and they see you going there you can lose your hustle gig with Uber. Even when you are offline the app can track you. I think you would need to sign out or close the app and make sure it doesn't auto load, plus you are taking a risk of driving the pax without insurance. and like you said they track your car because it's a lease with GPS, so it's not worth it.

Its certainly moral to accept such a trip. You don't have to bother asking Uber directly or indirectly about this.

I can tell you upfront that they don't like this strategy, and don't approve of it in the least. Its money out of their pockets.

What company wants to lose money on anything they setup, would you,

Back in my early taxi days I have my own Wireless visa/mastercard terminal portable in my car why because the taxi company took 20% of all charges, so a run from Highland California to LAX would have a $200 fare, the cab company would collect $40,

One of my taxi cab friends decided he will follow my example and get his own Visa Mastercard Wireless setup, he made the mistake of leaving it in his car when they took his car in for maintenance he didn't get his car back the taxi company took it.

It's your car. If a person agrees to pay you cash for a ride in your car, it should be with the understanding that it is a personal arrangement between you and that person, nobody else. Long as you both understand that beforehand, then you are in the clear. I sometimes give rides to friends and family for cash without even turning on the app, because it is a pesonal arrangement and none of Uber's or anybody else's business. Just be sure to CYA and you'll be alright.

If you take cash for a trip and dont have commercial insurance you risk having your personal insurance deny coverage if you were to get into an accident when tranposrting a paseenger for hire

Not worth the risk in my opinion

I agree a pax is quick to rat you out or a cop might ask about it at the crash, unless you let them know they have to pay their own hospital bills and you are a broke Uber driver, becuase you can drive friends or family around or even do a stranger a favor and as long as you don't charge them they are covered. it's not worth the risk of losing your personal auto policy and having to pay 3 times as much to be covered by another company.

I've done cash trips 3x and regretted it every time.

Just the insurance piece alone should be enough for most not to take the chance. Also any damage done by the pax you're left hanging with no recourse. In my case 2x I had pax that did damage to my car (1 threw up and the other left food all mushed up in my carpet)

While it's nice to have money in hand in my experience it just isn't worth it.

It is not damage done by passenger. It is if you are involved in an accident even if it is not your fault and the passenger is injured your are going to lose everything you have - not worth the risk

All insurance companies ask - first question - was this a ride for hire ? Was it a commercial use ? Always they want a way out of paying

Loys of us have done it. Its a huge liability, you could lose everything.

You would get deactivated if caught, you're basically stealing and it is against the terms of service.

These dumb ****s booked me through Lyft, took their friends to airport, and they asked can I come back to pick them up and take them to dinner after? (45 min back to their house close to my neighborhood) I said yes but they have to book me through Lyft b/c I dont have com insurance...they said yes. I go back to their drive way, tell them book it, and it gives them a driver 18 min away. They cancel & book again, another driver 15 min away. Meanwhile Im online & dont take a request that comes up b/c I am trying to get booked by them, this affects my rating for power driver bonus. Fml.

Then they offer me cash to take them to dinner & I said sorry I cant b/c no com insurance. The husband was like "oh we have a lot of insurance, its ok honey, I will just drive us to dinner" & I reveresed & left.

I told them up front they had to book thru the app, gtfo with the attitude.

Secondly, if we get in an accident & his wife dies or something it will be a whole other story on the insurance...

Pax ask me all the time to give them a cash ride home once they r done with dinner & I always politely decline, I can never get the app to book me if Im sitting right there and its not worth the cash if the situation goes bad...

I do believe Uber will find out and track you, especially if its a lease with that GPS connected.
The GPS has a sim card, google it..
