Wow. Just got an email from Uber:

XXXXXXX,

In November, we were excited to roll out a new referral offer that helped answer one of the most-asked questions from new and potential driver-partners: How much will I earn with Uber?

We're thrilled to continue that offer for any friends you refer, by guaranteeing their total payout for the first 40 trips they take.

Here's how it works.

Once your friend completes 40 trips in Seattle:
  • You earn a $200 referral reward
  • [NEW] Your friend is guaranteed $620 in total payout
Any friend you invite between now and March 26, 2017 qualifies for this offer. Start inviting today!

The details
  • This offer replaces your standard referral reward
  • The guarantee payout offer is only valid for those invited by driver-partners who directly received this email
  • Only new drivers who use your referral code or link to sign up and complete 40 trips within 90 days of signing up are eligible for this offer
  • If your referred driver earns less than $620 in total payout after 40 trips, they'll be paid the difference.

Find the catch?

They are not offering $620 after 40 trips. It is a pre-fees/commission guarantee on their first 40 trips. Uber will pay the difference.

LOL.

Well... they can stay in the U Dist and get 40 quick min rides and have their 40 done in two days. But the question is; say their total in gross fares is $320, will Uber then pay out $300 more or will it be $225 ($300 less the 25% commission)??? Enquiring (sic) minds want to know!!!

...and how does $620 + $200 = $800????

It essentially is a 40 ride minimum guarantee.

I am going to go with the $620 is pre 25%.

If they state $620.00 is the "total payout," then it is the amount after commission and fees. The definition of payout is net. Fares are a gross calculation, fares minus commission and fees equals payout. Looks to me like they are just trying to make the incentive look more attractive by bundling it with rides.

I wouldn't give them that much credit.

Lyft shows you "Earnings"in the app. But earnings are pre-commission.

Remember with both companies that legally WE PAY them a commission on our gross payout. It is an important difference that causes a ton of confusion with taxes.

800 or 820. I just put 800. I changed the title to $820.
