Got a ping 13 minutes away on Uber at 4:30 AM. Figured that it was an airport trip ($25-$30).

About halfway there, got a text from pax saying that they’d be ready about they’d be ready 10 minutes after I was due to arrive.

Got there, and the pickup was in an industrial area. Definitely not an airport trip - probably just a short trip home from work.

Waited 5 minutes and cancelled as a no show.

The cancel fee I received was about $8.50, and the pax paid an $11.50 cancel fee. I didn’t realize that no shows included the long pickup charge (which was 18 minutes in my case).

Nice to see that the lesson-learned stung a little more.

Always keep that clock running! They usually coming flying out at like 3 mins looking for you. As you sit right in front of them laughing. But it does work if you keep the clock running. NEVER start the clock early. Text or not I don’t care. Keep the clock going.

Such a short-signed strategy to cancel a ride when there is a very high probability the person is there and does need a ride in the next few minutes, not to mention a serious dick move. A normal cancel is what, $4.00 or so. You are already sitting there and have basically a guarenteed ride that will make you more than $4.00. The ride could make you much more than $4.00 if you get a tip.

The problem with so many drivers is that they are bitter and hate their lives, and they treat pax like they are not human beings. I guess I would hate my life if I was driving Uber X 12 hours a day for a total profit of $50.

They charge pax for mileage now on cancels if it's over the minimum fare.

@rdhall3637 , have to disagree with you.Feel free to let pax disrespect your time and keep you waiting, my time is worth more to take the fee and move on to the next call. I can take the $4.00 for driving nowhere, better than the 3 miles i would have to drive otherwise to make the same amount.

I probably would've at least asked where they were going before cancelling. Might've been an airport or some other longer/profitable trip after all.

But yeah, I've cancelled a long pickup before and also got $8.50 for it since Uber included the long pickup in there, too. Not bad. Considering I got pinged by the same guy a few minutes later and I picked him up for a $30+ ride. :roflmao:

I woulda shuffled them too. As far as a tip goes the jackass has already disrespected you and told you that your time is worthless by ordering a ride when he isn't ready to go. This attitude tends to make me think you have less than 1000 rides and might not be too happy with your own life. Before you go looking down on or at other drivers you should probably look into a mirror. You are one too...

I had a ride take me to a grocery story last night. Guy said, "I just gotta grab something for my wife."

I figure "sure, I'll wait if he is just grabbing something quick..." Waited 5 minutes and was getting pissed off. Didn't see him anywhere, waited one more and then bounced. We get paid dick for you to waste my time. I tell people who do the multiple stop thing "We don't get paid to wait, so I can only give you 4 minutes before I gotta move on."

The terms of are that you need to be ready to go within 5 minutes of arrival. This is out of respect for the driver's time.

This happened during prime airport run time. Considering that I was picking up from a business, it was a low likelihood that it was going to be a long ride.

Like I stated above, the next ping came a few minutes later, and it was... an airport ride... with a tip.

I probably made more on this cancel than I would have on the ride. Just estimating based on experience.

It's a dick move to ask a driver to come a long distance and then expect them to wait an additional 10 minutes for you. My time is not worth any less than yours. Order the ride when you are ready.

I did a long pickup once and got either 14 or 15 bucks for a no show, immediately got a ping a couple doors down at another bar drove them 20 mins away and got a ping from the first now show. Drove 29 mins back and no showed again. Another 13 bucks from the same guy. Lol

Y’all are braver than me.... accepting a second ping from a no show. I assume that they recognize you as their first “driver.”

I figure that part of the lesson learned for the pax is getting a farther-away driver and having to wait.

Recently accepted a long pickup ( 13 miles ) in the 1:30 AM time frame. While en route the rider texts to let them know when I'm close. At 2 minutes away send a "I'm 2 minutes away" Arrive and send the canned "I've arrived". Wait 4 minutes and call. They answer and say something like "I'll get her there in a few minutes". Wait another 4 minutes and call again. Get VM. Wait 2 more minutes. Cancel with remorse since I've driven a distance and waited for a good bit of time for an expected $3.75 cancel no show. Was very surprised when I received $14.23 for it. Rider paid a total of $18.98. Hope the account holder was really pissed! :roflmao:

That's a long way to drive at 1:30 AM. Glad you got something to show for your efforts.

I've taken the second ping a few times and I play it like this: "Did you cancel? That's wierd, the app must have glitched because Uber cancelled the call on my app. If they charged you you should ask for a refund." That makes me their bud and less likely to get a bad rating and now I got a bonus + the ride.

I hesitated for a bit whether I should accept the second ping or not, but I decided to play it cool and put the blame on Uber for cancelling it. Especially since he checked his card statement during the ride and saw he had been charged. Since he was drunk already and going to a guys poker night, I knew he wouldn't remember to do it, I told him to contact Uber in the morning to see what happened. Never heard back.

And on top of the cancellation fee, fare and tip, he bought me a scratch-off and a lottery ticket from 7-11 while en route. Scratch-off ended up being worth $20. :coolio:

I do agree that pax calling/texting you they won't be ready until x minutes is definitely a dick move on their part. Just need to weigh the situation and whether it's better to shuffle or not.

Had a scheduled Lyft airport trip yesterday morning at 5.20am. Less than a minute after I got the ping, the pax calls and says he will be at the location (hangar at our local airport) in 20 minutes. Weighed in the situation and still decided to drive the 10 minutes there. He actually showed up just as the 5 minutes was up, so it worked out fine. Got a nice tip from him, too.

You'd have to try driving for a while to know what it's like. In the beginning it's about the money, and then eventually, you're just trying to hold on to your dignity.
Try driving for a while.

That's not it at all.The customers work the system to take advantage of us.

The original poster was just leveling the playing field by working the system to take advantage of them.

Now if you showed up at the spot and the person runs out in a bathrobe with the $20 bill and says would you mind just waiting I'll be a few minutes.

I've done that one time. I was trying to drive away from them after canceling them, and got their next ping. I accepted it because, why should I lower my acceptance rate or go off line for someone breaking the rules. I'm just trying to make an honest living. I showed up for the second pickup, and the mom called me on the phone to complain, but was too afraid to talk to me face to face. But not too afraid to put her kid in my car. What kind of a parent is that? The only thing I worry about is if Uber sees the repeat cancelations and decides to hold it against me. So now I go off line and drive away.
