‘A metre matters’ rule extended in ACT

The 'a metre matters rule' has been extended in the ACT during a review of the two-year trial that ended on 31 October 2017.

When overtaking cyclists, motorists in the ACT must allow a sideways distance of at least one metre in a speed zone of 60 kilometres per hour or below and at least 1.5 metres in a higher speed zone.

The overtaking distance is measured from the right-most part of the bicycle, the rider or any trailer attached to the bicycle to the left-most part of the motor vehicle or anything projecting from the vehicle or any trailer (for example, a side mirror) at a height that could strike the rider or their bicycle or trailer.

To enable drivers to provide the minimum overtaking distance on narrow roads or on roads with narrow lanes, motorists may cross centre lines, straddle lane-lines and drive on painted islands if the driver has a clear view of any approaching traffic and it's safe to do so.

Where I drive in QLD this is also the law.
I was a cyclist but gave it away after 2 near death experiences.

CAR COLLIDING WITH BIKE = BIKE RIDER NEARLY ALWAYS COMING OFF 2ND BEST !

Many of the cyclist still refuse to ride continously in the cycling lanes and weave in and out of the vehicle lanes

Beware of rabid cyclist in pelotons ! I recenty nearly collected a few cyclist when the leader of the peloton swerved to the right into my path. I swerved safely to not collide with him as there was no oncoming traffic.

If there were oncoming vehicles I would had the peloton leader smash into my car and bring down several other cyclist.
